Waiters and waitresses working at Joe's Crab shack in Wilmington will no longer accept tips. The company is reported by CNN and other news networks to be the first restaurant in the industry to "drop tipping." Waiters and waitresses virtually live off of customer tips, as a majority of waiters and waitresses are paid a possible wage of $2.50 hourly and under. Who could live off of that kind of wage in today's world?
Joe's crab shack will allegedly pay servers $14 hourly. How will the company profit from paying their servers a set hourly wage? Will this mean increased hourly pay for servers in addition to health benefits upon working at the crab shack?
Supplemental Income
Most people working in the restaurant industry wait on tables as a means of supplementing income from their day job or working as a restaurant server until the next full-time job comes along. Waiting tables as a server is a job that requires patience because you're dealing with the general public and not being paid what you're worth. Is $14 an hour a fair wage at Joe's crab shack? Some people would arguably agree yes while others may say no. New York City Gov. Andrew Cuomo just raised the minimum wage for New York State workers from $8.75 to $15 hourly. Has Barack Obama's vision come to fruition on the topic of "change in America," by employers paying their workers higher wages?
You be the judge.
