    Key Points:
    • New York City Governor Kathy Hochul and the Federal Highway Administration has recently approves a $23 toll on people who intend to drive into midtown Manhattan, thus causing strain on the pockets of the working class who live paycheck to paycheck.
    • City, state, and under the table workers throughout the five boroughs of the Empire state often struggle to make ends meet.

From 1959 to 1994, the mother of the founder of this site once worked for the City of New York for the Agency for Child Development. She worked paycheck for paycheck for the duration of her 35 year career. When she moved to New York City in 1950, she resided in the Cooper Park projects, located in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn near the Kosciuszko Bridge.

Cooper Park, located in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, has a rich history intertwined with the development and growth of the community.

Here is a brief history of the Cooper Park projects:

Early History: Greenpoint, originally settled by the Dutch in the 17th century, evolved into a predominantly industrial area by the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As factories and warehouses proliferated, the need for recreational spaces became apparent. In response, the City of Brooklyn, before its consolidation into New York City, acquired land in the early 1900s to establish a public park.

Establishment of Cooper Park: In 1910, the newly formed Brooklyn Department of Parks and Recreation purchased land to create Cooper Park. The park was named in honor of Peter J. Cooper, a prominent industrialist and philanthropist, known for founding Cooper Union in Manhattan. Cooper Park, initially spanning 5 acres, was designed as a green oasis for the growing community.

Expansion and Development: Over the years, Cooper Park underwent several expansions and improvements. In the 1930s, additional land was acquired, increasing the park's size to 10 acres. The Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal agency, played a significant role in developing the park during this period. WPA workers constructed recreational facilities, including a pool, a playground, and a fieldhouse, which further enhanced the park's appeal.

Urban Renewal and the Cooper Park Houses: In the mid-20th century, Greenpoint, like many urban neighborhoods, experienced various challenges related to disinvestment and urban decay. To address the pressing need for affordable housing, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) initiated the Cooper Park Houses project. Construction of the public housing development began in the late 1950s and was completed in the early 1960s. The Cooper Park Houses consisted of multiple high-rise apartment buildings, providing affordable housing options for low-income residents.

Recent Revitalization Efforts: In recent years, Cooper Park has seen renewed interest and investment in revitalizing its facilities and enhancing its green spaces. Community groups, local organizations, and government agencies have collaborated on improvement projects, including playground renovations, the installation of new sports fields, and the restoration of the park's natural features. These efforts have aimed to create a more welcoming and vibrant recreational space for the Greenpoint community.

Today, Cooper Park remains an integral part of the Greenpoint neighborhood, serving as a gathering place for residents of all ages. With its diverse amenities, including sports fields, playgrounds, and a pool, the park continues to provide opportunities for recreation, socialization, and community engagement.

After she moved out of Cooper Park projects in Greenpoint Brooklyn, she relocated to Flatbush. Not just anywhere in Flatbush, but Newkirk Avenue and East 25th Street in Albina Court Apartments:

She continued working paycheck to paycheck for the city of New York, often standing in people's faces on payday asking to borrow money. As she was blessed throughout her career to retire in 1994, everyone she borrowed money from never told her no, nor did they tell her the amount she requested to borrow was too much. She struggled to make ends meet while living on Newkirk Avenue in Flatbush Brooklyn, until she got married in 1980 and moved further up in Flatbush not far from Midwood High School and Brooklyn College.
